Economic Development
“Economic growth doesn’t mean just attracting new businesses—it’s about helping existing businesses grow and thrive.” — Unknown
I owned a business here in Ventura County and understand the long hours and arduous work that go into building and maintaining a successful business. I have partnered with the Moorpark and Simi Valley Chambers of Commerce to help promote and grow local businesses. As a member of the Executive Committee and Board of the Economic Development Collaborative Ventura County, I work to help promote and grow our businesses.
I know that owning a business requires dedication, perseverance and a willingness to take risks. I know the importance of businesses to be involved in their communities to grow and thrive. I will continue to collaborate with our businesses at every opportunity and help solve business issues or concerns. I am committed to the success of your business and want to help your business grow and thrive. I am here for your business whenever needed.
I have worked with Edison to emphasize the impact that the Public Safety Power Shut Offs have on local businesses. I have been able to help businesses work directly with Edison to make sure they have the proper back up in the event of a PSPS event to keep their business running. Broadband has been something I have worked on since my days on the Moorpark City Council. I understand the importance of connection in any size business.
I am also working to bring more people to our County to enjoy our hotels, stores and restaurants. To do that I am working to help grow the film industry and help our local theaters grow and thrive. The 4th District is home to some very famous movies, television shows and commercials. I am working with County departments and film studios to bring more productions to our District. I was able to ensure the non-profit Arts and Culture Investment Fund Grants were distributed equally, and the board authorized funding to Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center Foundation, Simi Valley Cultural Association, the High Street Arts Center in Moorpark, and the Moorpark Symphony Orchestra.
Bringing Resources to Local Businesses

The City of Moorpark’s Economic Development Division plays a vital role in fostering local business success, attracting investment, and driving economic growth. Since its establishment, the Division has helped reduce the city’s retail vacancy rate from 13.9% in 2015 to a historic low of 3.5% in 2023. Through strategic efforts, Moorpark has welcomed major national and regional businesses like Amazon Fresh and DrinkPAK, while also supporting the growth of local establishments such as Calioh Coffee, Hearth Pizza, and Parkway Kabob & Grill. The City’s business-friendly approach is exemplified by its SPARK Program—an innovative, same-day permitting initiative that expedites development and has attracted companies like Bombardier and Quantum Systems.
Moorpark continues to thrive as a hub for innovation, with over 40 advanced manufacturing firms in sectors like aerospace, defense, and automotive technology. The City actively promotes its business community through the Discover Moorpark campaign—a robust digital and print initiative that highlights local businesses, available properties, and development news. With a strong social media presence and a dedicated business platform, DiscoverMoorpark.com. Moorpark stands out as the only city in Ventura County with an in-house economic development marketing program. Entrepreneurs and businesses seeking support are encouraged to connect with Economic Development Manager John Bandek for tailored guidance and resources.
The Moorpark Chamber of Commerce, established in 1915, serves as the unified voice of local businesses, aiming to foster a thriving economy in Moorpark. Through education, advocacy, and valuable resources, the Chamber supports business growth, creates new opportunities, and strengthens the community’s economic landscape. It offers networking events like monthly breakfasts, as well as additional events to connect business owners. The Chamber also advocates for pro-business policies locally, statewide, and nationally, while hosting various committees focused on growth, the environment, and government interaction. For more involvement, members can reach out to the Chamber directly.
The City of Simi Valley is committed to fostering a sustainable economy by building strong relationships with property owners and advocating for both the City and businesses. Staff collaborates with property owners to attract new businesses, support existing ones, and enhance the community’s economic vitality through marketing available properties and pursuing development aligned with the City’s long-term goals.
The City prioritizes business retention and expansion, with revitalization projects like the Simi Valley Town Center and new dining options such as Cork and Batter Roadhouse and McKenna Beach House transforming the area into a vibrant destination. Simi Valley remains a popular filming location, with 286 productions in 2024, contributing to local tourism, businesses, and job creation.
Housing development is a key focus, with over 1,000 residential units planned or in progress, driving retail growth and providing residents with convenient access to shopping, dining, and entertainment. Industrial projects will add 1.5 million square feet of space, supporting job creation and business growth. These efforts aim to create a thriving, diversified community for businesses and residents alike.
For over 70 years, the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce has been welcoming visitors and supporting local businesses. The Chamber helps improve the community through partnerships with government, education, and other organizations, working to create a better place to live, work, and play. The Chamber provides services like networking opportunities, business development programs, marketing support, and advocacy for pro-business policies at local, state, and national levels. It also serves as the official visitor center, promotes tourism, and organizes events like the Street Fair and Business Expo. Additionally, the Chamber influences public policy, represents business interests, and helps strengthen the local economy.
I have had the opportunity to serve on the Economic Development Collaborative (EDC) Board, and their executive board, where we’ve worked to support business growth and attract new businesses to Ventura County. Founded in 1996 as a private nonprofit, EDC was established with funding from Ventura County, its 10 cities, and key private-sector partners to promote business growth, economic prosperity, and a high quality of life for all.
Today, in partnership with the Small Business Development Center, the EDC serves as a regional asset, supporting economic vitality in Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles counties. The EDC provides businesses, community partners, and civic leaders with the resources they need to succeed, using a mix of public and private funding to drive business consulting, funding, and strategic initiatives that strengthen the regional economy.
Ways we are helping Businesses in the East County
Business Resource Forum
I was a partner of the Business Resources Forum put on by the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce. This was a series of panel discussions with people from Economic Development, Workforce Development, Cybersecurity backgrounds, Manufacturing backgrounds, and Employer Training Resources. This event aimed to bring resources and information to businesses in Simi Valley.
East County Manufacturing Round Table:
In a collaborative effort to foster economic growth and innovation in the manufacturing sector, a diverse group of local manufacturing companies, schools with a focus on manufacturing, and local officials from Simi Valley and Moorpark gathered for a roundtable discussion, hosted by the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce. The meeting provided an opportunity for key stakeholders to exchange ideas, share insights, and explore strategies to strengthen the manufacturing industry in the Fourth District of Ventura County. By working together, these groups aim to address challenges, enhance workforce development, and ensure that the region remains a competitive hub for manufacturing in the years to come. This initiative marks an exciting step forward in creating a robust and sustainable economic future for our community.
Youth Employment Services Board:
The Fourth District is represented on a board managed by the City of Simi Valley, which aims to help local youth secure jobs early on. The board’s mission is to bridge the gap between employers and potential workers from nearby high schools. With the growing challenges of finding employees in recent years, we’re committed to being there whenever we can to facilitate these important connections.
